How this works
Guideline committees decide which evidence should change practice. This site ranks papers by how consistently their guidelines cite them, rather than by impact factor or press coverage.
- The crowd: PubMed guidelines published 2011–2026. have reference lists in NIH iCite.
- No double counting: updates, executive summaries and reprints of the same guideline count once. That leaves independent guidelines.
- Breadth beats volume: a society's fourth guideline citing a paper adds less than a new society's first. Papers cited across many years rank higher.
- Left out: guidelines citing other guidelines, evidence-grading methods papers (GRADE, PRISMA and similar) and cancer-statistics reports.
- Therapy areas come from each paper's MeSH disease headings. Within an area, papers are ranked by that area's guidelines.
- Gaps: WHO and NICE guidelines have no reference data in PubMed or iCite, so they aren't counted. Coverage of Chinese-language guidelines is thin.
